Reading Passage:
John Adams was the second president of the United States. He was born on October 30th, 1735 in Braintree Colony of Massachusetts. Education was important to the Adams family and John attended Harvard College. Before becoming President he was a farmer, a teacher, and a lawyer. He married Abigail Smith in 1764. He served as a member of the Continental Congress. He would nominate George Washington to be the commander of the army and select Thomas Jefferson to draft the Declaration of Independence. He would also help to write a letter of grievance to Britain. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a diplomat and helped to negotiate the treaty of peace. Before becoming president he served as the first vice president under George Washington. He represented the Federalist Party. His one term of presidency lasted from 1797 to 1801. During his retirement he returned to farming, writing to old friends and publishing in newspapers. His son, John Quincy Adams would later become the 6th president of the United States in 1825. John Adams is considered “The Father of the Navy”. He died on July 4th, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
