Reading Passage:
Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States. He was born April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. Jefferson spent his younger years reading, riding horses, and attending school. He started school at five and attended various schools before graduating from the College of William and Mary in 1764. He was a lawyer and also a delegate in the Virginia House of Burgess from 1769 to 1775. On January 1st, 1772, Jefferson married Martha Wayles at his home in Monticello. They would go on to have six children. The Declaration of Independence was written primarily by Thomas Jefferson. He also served as a Delegate for the Second Continental Congress in 1775. He became friends with John Adams and served as his Vice President from 1797-1801. Thomas Jefferson was elected president on March 4th, 1801 and served two terms. He was a Democratic-Republican. While in office he oversaw the Louisiana Purchase from France. Jefferson died on July 4th, 1826. He died on what was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
