We are starting a series all about how to get started homeschooling. If you would like to learn more, please check out the guide that goes along with the series here. These will be quick and actionable steps to help you start your homeschooling journey.

First up, why? I know as parents we get asked this question SO MANY TIMES!! Probably enough times that, honestly, if we never heard it again, it would be too soon. BUT, to start your homeschool journey right, you need to find your “why.” Your “why” will get you through the tough times. It will be a reminder when you want to throw up your hands and give up (because, trust me, there will be those days). Your “why” will guide you in making the best decisions for you, your kids, and your homeschool. It will be the force behind what keeps you going.

This is what is going to keep you going during the hard times. Your “why” will keep you motivated when the honeymoon period is over. Plus, it will inevitably happen that you're at the grocery store and someone asks you why are you homeschooling, and you will have an answer ready!

SO HOW TO FIND YOUR WHY FOR HOMESCHOOLING?

Step 1: Brain dump all the reasons you want to get started homeschooling.

Some ideas to help:

  • How will this help my child?
  • This will allow us to _________________________.
  • Our lives will be _________________________ if we homeschool.
  • Homeschooling will be ___________________________ for our family.

Just write down anything that comes to mind. There are no wrong answers.

Step 2: Circle the top 3 reasons (the most meaningful).

Step 3: Now, form those into a few sentences.

For example:

My “why” we homeschool:

Homeschooling allows us to spend valuable time as a family. Homeschooling gives us the freedom to learn how, what, and when is best for our children. My children will be able to spend time playing as children and exploring their interests as they grow into well-rounded adults. This time together while tough sometimes is so worth all the memories we are making.

Step 4: Write this down or print it out and put it somewhere you will see it often! This is so important.

The take-away for your homeschool:

When I started homeschooling, I wish I had taken the time to do this exercise. Getting started homeschooling is challenging. Some days you will want to throw in the towel, but don't! Remember your “why” and remember the best things in life are sometimes hard, BUT homeschooling is worth it. There is nothing like being there for your kids' “ah-ha” moments or watching their eyes light up when they learn about something that interests them.
