Who hasn’t heard grumbles from your students when you pull out handwriting practice worksheets. They aren’t the “most fun,” and the students need to be patient and do their best handwriting, which means no rushing through. I know my kids are not fond of most handwriting practice worksheets. But here are three reasons that I love good handwriting practice in our homeschool and some tips to make kids enjoy it a little more.

The 3 Reasons

1. Improved handwriting

The first and probably the most commonly thought of reason to practice handwriting is: Practice makes perfect. Students who daily practice handwriting tend to have much neater and legible handwriting. The practice of handwriting also helps them work on their fine motor skills, which can help them in other aspects of their lives.

2. Retain information

A study done in 2020 shows that when a student writes a word down by hand, more parts of the brain associated with learning are activated. The study suggests that handwriting helps the brain form more complex neural networks. While learning to type is very important in today’s modern age, being able to write well is just as important.

3. Helps writing and literacy skills

If you have been in the homeschooling world for any amount of time, you have likely heard of Charlotte Mason. She taught that students should do transcription or copywork to learn perfect handwriting. It would also help reinforce proper spelling and grammar. Also, it will help a student pay attention to details, recall information, and learn “the lesson” from a provided passage.

So how to add fun to handwriting practice.

  1. High-interest passages!! Most kids love to learn new things, especially about topics they find interesting. My suggestion is to find passages, such as these animal handwriting practice worksheets, that will interest the child and provide great handwriting practice.
  2. Stress proper handwriting over lengthy passages, especially for younger students. Make it short and sweet! These monthly themed handwriting passages provide short and to-the-point sentences that are perfect for a beginning student learning to write.
